Lipton Tea

Thomas Lipton was born in Glasgow Scotland in 1848, the son of an Irish grocer. He built an empire selling affordable tea to the working class.
After a fungus destroyed the coffee industry in Ceylon, tea proved to be an excellent replacement. Lipton purchased over a dozen estates, planting his own tea and installing machinery to handle production. In order to make his tea affordable he realized he needed to cut out the middleman or Tea Broker. He advertised his tea as “ direct from tea garden to tea pot”. Lipton became known for selling a reliable product at an affordable price.
Unilever, a British-Dutch company now owns Lipton and sells it in more than 150 countries. While it continues to buy tea from Sri Lanka, it no longer owns its own gardens on the Island which were sold off after Lipton’s death.
