Egg cartons were invented in 1911 in Smithers, British Columbia by Joseph Coyle after he overheard a dispute over broken eggs between a local farmer and hotel owner.
Joseph Coyle was a newspaper man and part-time inventor. His designed the very first egg carton from newspaper, with cushioned slots for each egg.
The design was patented both in Canada and the US and eventually mass produced in his company the Egg Safety Carton Company.
